A Clinical Review of 110 Cases of Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
Clinical observation were made on 110 cases of inguinal hernias, who were admitted and treated at the Dept. of General Surgery, Korea University Woo Sok Hospital during the past 5 years period from January 1969 to September 1974.
1. The incidence of inguinal hernia among total cases operated in the Dept. of General Surgery in the same period was in 4.7%.
2. The ratio of male to female was 17: 1 and age bracket of newborn to 5 years occupied 45.50 of the total cases.
3. The side of inguinal hernia was on the right in 68 cases (61.8%), on the left in 39 cases (35.4%), and bilateral in 3 cases (2.8%). Indirect type was in 89 cases (80.9%), direct type in 20 cases (18.3%), and combined type in 1 case (0.9%).
Incarceration was noted in 14%, and hydrocele was combined in 11.8% of the total cases.
4. The cardinal symptoms and signs were bulging of the inguinal region in 65.4%, scrotal enlargement in 33.6%, abdominal pain in 11.8%, and vomiting in 6.4%.
5. Of the total cases repaired, high legation of the sac was done for 13 infants. Bassini type in 61 cases and McVay method in 32 cases for herniorraphy were done for children and adults.
6. In the entire group of 110 hernias, there were 4(3.6%) recurrent cases in which one was in high legation of the sac, two in Bassini method, and another one was obscure about the method used for repair.
7. Postoperative complications including wound infection, hematoma, pneumonia, and recur-rent hernia were noted in 11.8%of the total 110 cases repaired.
